 Ora Dee Hadnot Beatty (1919–1967)

Ora Dee Hadnot was born on December 13, 1919, in Jasper County, Texas, to Ada Larkin, who was just 17 years old, and Albert Hadnot, age 27. She was raised in a farming family in Precinct 2 of Jasper County, where life centered on hard work, close family ties, and rural traditions.

At a young age, Ora Dee experienced the responsibilities of adulthood. On August 1, 1933, at only 13 years old, she gave birth to her first daughter, Irene Bryant, whose father was Earl Bryant. Less than a year later, on May 19, 1934, Ora Dee married Ennis Lee Beatty in Jasper County. The ceremony was performed by Reverend S. W. Calhoun.

By 1940, Ora Dee was living with her husband on Peach Tree Road in Jasper County. She was a housewife and mother, with two young daughters, Addirene and Mary Joe. Her formal education ended after the fourth grade, but she carried the knowledge and strength needed to manage a growing household.

Tragedy struck the family on June 18, 1943, when her five-year-old daughter, Mary Joe, passed away from unknown causes. She was laid to rest in Hadnot Cemetery, a place that held deep family connections.

Despite hardships, Ora Dee continued raising her family. According to the 1950 census, she was 30 years old and the mother of eight children: Irene, Addirene, Kenneth Ray, Gloria, Early Mae, Sarah, Flora, and Gracie. She balanced the demands of motherhood with work outside the home, showing remarkable resilience.

Ora Dee worked as a maid during the day and at night at a small downtown Jasper restaurant known as the Wedge Inn. She became especially known for making the chili that the restaurant was famous for, contributing to a small but meaningful part of the local community.

On August 8, 1967, after working overnight at the restaurant, Ora Dee began to feel unwell. She went to Richardson Hospital in downtown Jasper. While waiting in the segregated “colored” waiting room, she died at 8:20 a.m. Doctors later determined the cause of death to be a heart attack.

Ora Dee Hadnot Beatty was laid to rest in Indian Creek Cemetery in Jasper County, Texas. Her life reflects the strength, endurance, and quiet contributions of a woman who worked tirelessly for her family despite the many challenges she faced.
